The Uttar Pradesh (UP) government is set to invest approximately Rs. 10,500 crores in a new 1,320 megawatt (Mw) thermal power project in Etah district, Western UP. The Jawaharpur thermal power project consists of two units, each with a capacity of 660 Mw, totaling 1,320 Mw. This project aims to address the increasing power demand in UP, which has already reached 26,000 Mw during the summer season. However, the plant has experienced significant delays of over two years, prompting the state government to accelerate its synchronization process.

M Devraj, chairman of UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) and UP Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL), has instructed officials to expedite the project. The plant is being developed by Jawaharpur Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited, a subsidiary of UPRVUNL. Originally scheduled for synchronization in 2021, the project faced numerous setbacks compounded by the effects of the lockdown. Although a new timeline was set for synchronization in April of this year, it was also missed. The state energy department officials expressed dissatisfaction with the repeated delays, leading the UPPCL chief to hold the responsible officials and agencies accountable.

The Jawaharpur plant will utilize supercritical technology and receive coal supply from the Saharpur Jamarpani coal block in Jharkhand, which will be developed by UPRVUNL. The project has been granted a 'Bridge Linkage' by the coal ministry, acting as a short-term coal supply arrangement until production from the allotted coal mine/block commences. The Lower Ganga Canal will fulfill the water requirements of the project. The state government is also coordinating with the Railways to ensure efficient coal transportation for the project, aiming to reduce costs and increase inventory. Furthermore, another 660 Mw thermal power unit located in the Obra plant in Sonbhadra district is expected to be commissioned by the end of this month.
