Saryu Roy, MLA of Jamshedpur (East) and an environmental activist, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the establishment of a coal dump and coal siding near the platform at Bhurkunda railway station. A massive fire has engulfed the coal, raising concerns about pollution and safety. Roy has questioned how and why the railway siding and coal dump, located in close proximity to the platform, caught fire, leading to significant pollution.

Roy, who is also the convener of the Damodar Bachao campaign, highlighted the adverse impact of the coal fire, dust, and smoke on the lives of villagers. He intends to approach the state pollution control body to obtain information regarding the no objection certificate (NOC) issued for the coal siding operated by Central Coalfields Limited (CCL). Roy also raised concerns about coal theft, which is a prevalent issue in such sidings. The fire at the coal siding, situated on the Muri-Daltonganj route of the Eastern Central Railway (ECR), has intensified, generating high flames and causing heat and pollution in the surrounding area.

Efforts are underway to extinguish the fire, with four fire tenders currently deployed at the site. Jayant Sinha, the local Member of Parliament and Chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on finance, visited the location and urged the railways, Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), and the district administration to take immediate action to control the massive fire. Although the chief public relations officer of East Central Railway (ECR) previously stated that the fire at the Bhurkunda coal siding had been extinguished using four fire engines, recent reports indicate that the fire is still raging.
