The central labour department has initiated the process for the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) trade union elections, setting the date for December 27, just a day after the announcement of assembly election results. The draft voters list was released by the labour department, marking the commencement of the election process.

In the recently concluded assembly polls on November 30, the Congress secured a victory in the coal belt seats, except for one seat won by its ally, the CPI. Despite this, the BRS-affiliated Telangana Boggugani Karmika Sangham (TGBKS), the recognized union in SCCL, did not win any seats in the coal belt. The Singareni constituency comprises around 45,000 voters.

KT Rama Rao, the working president of BRS, expressed disappointment during a press conference, citing the party's inability to secure a seat in the coal belt despite initiating various welfare measures for the workers.

The SCCL trade union elections were initially slated to take place a few months back but faced postponement due to the state government's request amid assembly election arrangements. The Telangana High Court eventually allowed the elections to proceed on December 27, post the assembly elections. Notably, in the previous assembly elections of 2019, TBGKS emerged as the recognized union, with MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha elected as honorary president, although she later resigned from the position.
