India refrained from endorsing a renewable energy pledge during the COP28 climate meeting due to references demanding coal phase-out and an end to fresh investments in the coal sector. The country's stance on continued coal use for electricity generation, coupled with economic and developmental imperatives, stood in contrast to the pledge, resulting in its non-endorsement.

Similarly, India is expected to abstain from endorsing a health declaration due to references suggesting the curbing of emissions from the health sector, aligning with its avoidance of sectoral approaches outside the UNFCCC framework.

The COP discussions included initiatives by the host country, aiming to build alliances on specific subjects for climate action. These pledges lack legal sanctity and often diminish over time, with India rarely participating in such platforms.

Despite India's reluctance towards these declarations, discussions within the COP process regarding the tripling of global renewable energy capacities by 2030 are anticipated. Studies estimate that this action could potentially prevent approximately one billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions annually till 2030, according to the International Energy Agency.
