India, a leading coal producer and consumer globally, is targeting a substantial increase in underground coal production, seeking to bolster energy supply in a more environmentally conscious manner compared to opencast mines. A senior official from India revealed plans to triple coal output from underground mines by 2030, aligning with a broader strategy to halt coal imports by 2025-2026.

The Ministry of Coal aims to achieve 100 million tons of coal production from underground mines by 2030, emphasizing the adoption of mass production technology to further expand these efforts. The recent launch of auctions for 39 mines marks a pivotal step in realizing this ambitious target, as announced by Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi.

Highlighting the significance of coal in India's economic growth, a senior official from the coal ministry emphasized the relatively lower land degradation and disturbances associated with underground mining compared to opencast methods. India, which heavily relies on coal for electricity generation, continues to prioritize coal to meet its surging industrial and power demands, with coal contributing to around 70% of the country's electricity generation.

While global conversations at COP28 focus on the future of fossil fuels, India remains steadfast in its reliance on coal. Recent data indicates a significant surge in coal production, with an 18.59% increase in October year-on-year and a 13.05% rise between April and October in the fiscal year 2023/2024. The Ministry of Coal reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining consistent coal production and distribution to ensure a reliable energy supply supporting the nation's ongoing development.
