In the fiscal year 2022-23, India exported 1.163 million tonnes of coal to its neighbouring countries, including Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan, as reported by the coal ministry on Tuesday. Most of this coal, approximately 0.833 million tonnes, was exported to Nepal, with 0.245 million tonnes going to Bangladesh, 0.053 million tonnes to Bhutan, and 0.032 million tonnes to other destinations, according to the latest Provisional Coal Statistics for FY23.

Despite facing a shortage of coal domestically compared to the demand, India managed to export a certain quantity of coal to its neighbouring countries during the fiscal year 2022-23, the coal ministry noted. Coal remains the primary source of commercial energy in India, accounting for half of the country's energy consumption and maintaining its status as the dominant fuel for power generation due to its reliability when compared to other renewable energy sources, as stated by the coal ministry in a release.
