Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has identified the Kusile Power Station as a critical component in rebalancing South Africa's electricity supply and demand. Speaking at the Association of Municipal Electricity Utilities' 69th Convention, Ramokgopa emphasized that restoring more units at the Kusile power station is vital to mitigating load shedding. He stressed that calculated risks must be taken to prevent worsening blackouts.

Kusile Power Station consists of six generating units, each with an 800MW capacity, totaling 4,800 MW. The plant employs supercritical-pressure technologies for more efficient power generation compared to standard coal-fired systems, resulting in significantly reduced CO2 emissions.

Ramokgopa underscored the need to address not only load shedding but also the financial sustainability of municipalities and the decarbonization agenda. Kusile is actively working to reduce CO2 emissions and is on track to meet its decarbonization goals.

Regarding South Africa's current energy crisis, Ramokgopa emphasized the necessity of expediting energy projects, noting that there is a strong private sector appetite to participate in resolving the energy challenges. Currently, 66 GW of wind and solar projects are in development, reflecting this private sector interest.
