South Africa's state-owned power utility, Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd., has eased power outages due to an improvement in generation capacity. Eskom initially announced a Stage 3 load shedding but later stated that a Stage 4 load shedding would be implemented. This means that 2,000 megawatts will be cut from the grid from 4 p.m. on Monday until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, followed by another 2,000 megawatts being cut from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. This pattern will continue until further notice. In response to these ongoing power outages, Cape Town has started wheeled renewable power transactions. This involves using the existing grid to transport electricity bought and sold between private parties in different areas. Growthpoint Properties Ltd. generated rooftop solar power in Constantia, which was added to the grid, with an equivalent amount of electricity sold to customers in another building in Cape Town. Etana Energy, a licensed electricity trader, also participated in the deal. Cape Town has initiated a six-month pilot project for wheeled power, with 15 participants representing 25 generators and 40 customers. This pilot project aims to provide the foundation for expanding the initiative. Meanwhile, Eskom continues to experience challenges with its coal-fired plants, with variability in their power supply worse than that of renewable energy sources on the grid. Eskom's general manager for system operations, Isabel Fick, highlighted that variability on the renewables fleet is about 150 megawatts, compared to 4,000 megawatts for the rest of the network. German energy consultants have completed a review of Eskom's struggling coal-fired plants and will submit the report to South Africa's finance minister. Eskom has appealed to consumers to reduce electricity use due to increased demand caused by cold weather. Eskom has been implementing Stage 6 power cuts, removing 6,000 megawatts of capacity from the grid, to prevent a total blackout. These developments reflect ongoing challenges in South Africa's power supply and the efforts to address them, including diversifying energy sources and improving grid reliability.
