At the presentation of African Rainbow Minerals' (ARM) 2023 financial results, the company's executive chairman, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, emphasized the importance of tangible results arising from the partnership between South Africa's mining industry and the state-owned rail enterprise Transnet. ARM reported negative impacts on the volumes of iron ore, manganese ore, and thermal coal due to logistical challenges in the 12 months ending June 30. Motsepe stressed the need for the private sector to employ the best individuals for the job, regardless of their racial background, highlighting the importance of experience in leadership positions.

Motsepe emphasized that there is no time for experimentation or playing around, as achieving results is paramount. He called for the mining industry and Transnet to collaborate effectively and build trust, aiming for efficient and timely train services.

In response to an analyst's question about ARM's increased 2024 iron ore export volume guidance, ARM Ferrous CEO Andre Joubert explained that the higher guidance was influenced by several factors. These included a worker strike at Transnet the previous year, a slow ramp-up to production, and the reallocation of Transnet resources from Beeshoek to Khumani iron ore mine. Additionally, improvements in track conditions and speed restrictions were addressed through collaboration with Transnet and other iron ore producers, ultimately aiming to increase train slots from 35 to 38 per week.

Joubert expressed confidence in achieving these targets through concrete actions and planning with Transnet, emphasizing that it was not merely wishful thinking but a practical strategy.
