Under pressure to increase coal exports, Transnet has lifted 19 temporary speed restrictions on the railway line between Mpumalanga and the port of Richards Bay. This decision followed collaboration between business and Transnet to improve rail freight movements, with a focus on the North Corridor leading to the Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT). Thungela Resources, a major thermal coal exporter, is part of this collaboration and has noted improvements in rail performance. However, Transnet clarified that these changes affected specific temporary speed restrictions and were not the same as the standard speed limits along the entire route.

The recent speed restrictions lifted by Transnet were due to subpar conditions on the rail line, which have now been improved through maintenance and repairs. Thungela's involvement in collaboration efforts aims to stabilize and enhance rail performance on the North Corridor. Transnet emphasized its commitment to safety and that approved section speeds and train operating speeds adhere to engineering and safety regulations.

Unfortunately, there have been recent collisions between trains and wildlife, including rhinos, along the railway line. Some wildlife reserves have reported an increase in deaths and casualties due to trains possibly ignoring speed limits. Transnet is working on installing additional speed warning signs in areas with a history of wildlife collisions.

While the collaboration between Thungela and Transnet has led to improvements, concerns remain regarding safety, especially in areas with wildlife populations. The focus on enhancing rail performance and adhering to safety regulations is critical for both business operations and environmental conservation.
