In June, a Warsaw court made a ruling to suspend the environmental permit for the Turow mine due to concerns about its impact on the environment. The suspension was related to an ongoing court case regarding the potential significant damage it could cause to the environment.

The ruling party, Law and Justice (PiS), vowed to oppose any attempts to close the mine, which provides 8% of Poland's energy, in order to safeguard jobs and the nation's energy security.

However, on Tuesday, Poland's Supreme Administrative Court overturned the suspension, stating that energy security is a constitutional value and a guarantee of state independence and citizen security.

PiS has framed efforts to shut down the Turow mine as an attack on Poland's sovereignty, portraying the opposition as elitists who side with foreign powers against the country.

Climate Minister Anna Moskwa expressed her approval of the decision on Twitter, stating that the fight for Turow and energy security would continue.

Environmental groups have long criticized the open-pit mine, located near the Czech Republic border, for its environmental impact. The Czech Republic raised concerns about air and noise pollution, as well as the depletion of underground water resources caused by the mine.

Ana Meres, coordinator of the climate and energy campaign at Greenpeace, noted that the final verdict in the case is yet to be announced, indicating tha t today's judgment does not conclude the Turow mine's legal proceedings.
