US-based equipment manufacturer, John Deere, has announced its plan to deliver 1.5 million low or no carbon machines to its global network of dealers by 2026, including its South African headquarters in Boksburg, Gauteng. The company's construction and forestry sales manager for Southern Africa, Griffiths Makgate, stated that John Deere is preparing to introduce hybrid vehicles, followed by electric heavy equipment in the near future. Makgate emphasized the considerations that need to be made when purchasing electric heavy equipment, including higher upfront costs due to electronic features and functions, but lower long-term maintenance expenses. He advised customers to rely on the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for support and warned of the potential high cost of replacing batteries and other components. Makgate highlighted the advantages of hybrid machines, such as better efficiency balance compared to electric machines. He also noted the charging challenges associated with electric equipment but mentioned that hybrid machines can be charged by the operator or using the onboard engine. Makgate explained the self-charging capability of hybrid machines and their ability to transfer power to the wheels directly. Although hybrid vehicles have been available in other markets since 2013, Makgate mentioned that it may take some time for them to become available in South Africa due to engine emission ratings not being suitable for the African market. Nevertheless, he emphasized the energy efficiency and advanced technology in John Deere mining vehicles, including transmission ratios and cooling features. John Deere intends to expand its mining offerings, which currently consist primarily of articulated dump trucks (ADTs) and dozers.
