The Meghalaya High Court has issued a directive to the Assam Police chief to take action against individuals accused of participating in the illegal mining and transportation of coal in Meghalaya. The court also emphasized the need to ensure the safety of the petitioners involved in the case. This order follows the high court's show cause notice to the Meghalaya government, questioning why the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) should not investigate the illegal mining and use of coal, especially as the activities appear to be controlled by individuals based in Assam.

In addition, the court stated that the Director General of Police in Assam should investigate a complaint filed by the petitioner on June 30, 2023, and take appropriate legal steps in response. The petitioner had previously filed an FIR (First Information Report) at Basista Police Station, alleging that a key figure in the illegal coke plant operations in Meghalaya had threatened him and visited his residence to discourage further pursuit of the petition.

The Meghalaya High Court has instructed the Assam police to ensure the safety and security of the petitioners, their family members, and the lawyers representing them. The court will resume hearing most of the petitions related to illegal coal mining and transportation on July 13.
