According to an official statement released on Monday by the Ministry of Coal, India's total coal production witnessed a growth of 8.40% in the April-June period of the fiscal year 2023-24, reaching 222.93 million tonnes (MT). In the same quarter of the previous year, the country produced 205.65 MT of coal.

During the first quarter of FY24, captive mines and others recorded a growth of 4.74%, producing 30.48 MT compared to 29.10 MT in the first quarter of FY23.

Cumulative coal dispatches also increased by 6.97% in Q1 of the current fiscal year, reaching 239.69 MT compared to 224.08 MT in Q1 of FY23. As of June 30, 2023, the total coal stock surged by 37.62%, standing at 107.15 MT (provisional), compared to 77.86 MT in the previous year.

The Ministry of Coal stated, "This growth indicates the continued efforts to meet the rising demand for coal." State-owned Coal India Limited (CIL) recorded a growth of 9.85%, producing 175.35 MT in Q1 of FY24, as compared to 159.63 MT in the same period last year.

Coal and Mines Minister Pralhad Joshi stated last month that India will not face any coal shortage this year, even during the monsoon season.
