New Delhi: The Ministry of Coal announced on Wednesday the commencement of the registration process for the star rating of coal and lignite mines. This initiative aims to assess and acknowledge mines based on their compliance with legal requirements, utilization of advanced mining technologies, economic accomplishments, and adherence to best practices.

"The star rating policy aims to evaluate mines on seven key parameters, including mining operations, environmental factors, technology adoption, best practices, economic performance, rehabilitation and resettlement, worker compliance, and safety and security," stated the ministry.

The notification for registration of coal and lignite mines for the Star Rating program was issued on May 30, and the registration portal was opened on June 1. Within a short period until June 19, a record number of 376 mines have already applied for participation, surpassing the previous years.

The ministry expects more mines to register as the portal will remain open until June 30. Participating mines are encouraged to conduct a comprehensive self-evaluation by July 31, 2023. The top 10% of mines with the highest scores will undergo further validation through inspections, while the remaining 90% will undergo an online review process.

Participants will also have the opportunity to review other mines as part of the evaluation process. The entire review process is expected to be completed by October 31, 2023. A final review by the Coal Controller's Organization will take place, leading to the publication of the results by January 31, 2024. The evaluation process will ensure transparency and impartiality.

The Ministry of Coal aims to enhance the overall performance and sustainability of coal and lignite mining in the country by promoting competitiveness and responsible mining practices. The awarded ratings will range from Five Star to NO Star, providing a comprehensive assessment of each mine's achievements.
