The Kingdom of the Netherlands and South African state-owned power utility Eskom have signed a letter of intent to collaborate on just energy transition (JET) initiatives at the Grootvlei power station. The aim is to support job creation and community upliftment as the power station transitions from coal generation to renewable energy. The agreement follows a prefeasibility study conducted in July 2022, which explored a climate-smart agriculture and horticulture development at the site. Both parties consider the use of technology in agriculture to mitigate climate change and create jobs as areas of mutual importance. The agreement sets out an integrated and sustainable approach for repurposing the Grootvlei power station, emphasizing the need to develop a smart agriculture demonstration facility, collaborate on agricultural activities, and train community members. The partners also plan to explore opportunities for job creation through training and upskilling local community members. Additionally, they aim to establish a market for profitable, sustainable, and climate-smart farming in the region. Knowledge and skills transfer between the Netherlands and South Africa, as well as the improvement and creation of local enterprises, are key objectives. The collaboration aligns with the just energy transition principles, taking into account social impacts on surrounding communities and prioritizing responsible and inclusive approaches to the transition away from coal reliance. Eskom acknowledges the need to mitigate the impact of the closure of coal plants on coal mining communities and aims to repower and repurpose existing coal plants while exploring multiple avenues for system stability and security of supply. The partnership reflects Eskom's commitment to combat climate change and the Netherlands' support for the just energy transition in South Africa.
