The government announced significant progress in the reclamation of the Jamuna Open Cast Project (OCP) undertaken by Coal India's subsidiary, South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL). As part of its concerted efforts toward environmental stewardship, the project aims to curtail the environmental impacts associated with coal mining activities.
The Jamuna OCP, located in Madhya Pradesh, ceased mining operations in June 2014 due to resource depletion. Subsequently, a meticulously planned mine closure was initiated. Recent satellite data revealed that 88.07% of the quarry area has been successfully reclaimed, showcasing the Ministry's steadfast commitment to sustainable coal mining practices, according to a statement issued by the coal ministry.
Moreover, a substantial portion of the reclaimed land, spanning 672 hectares, has been allocated for afforestation endeavours. The ministry highlighted this initiative as a testament to its dedication to sustainable development and responsible resource management.
The Ministry emphasized that by implementing such comprehensive measures, it aims to set a benchmark for the industry, illustrating that economic activities such as coal mining can harmoniously coexist with environmental preservation efforts.
