According to the latest statistical report released by the Ministry of Coal, India's coal sector has showcased remarkable progress in various key aspects during October 2023. The data indicates significant growth in coal production, coking coal production, dispatch, and power generation, underscoring the sector's pivotal role in meeting the country's energy demands. Let's delve into the comprehensive overview of the statistical highlights.
India's coal production witnessed a substantial increase of 8.51% in October 2023, reaching 5.10 MT, compared to 4.70 MT in October 2022. This notable surge was attributed to the commendable performances of Coal India Limited (CIL) and Captives/Others, registering growth rates of 15.36%, 10.86%, and a remarkable 44.47%, respectively. They produced 61.07 MT, 5.79 MT, and 11.79 MT of coal, contributing significantly to the increased coal production.

The total coking coal production for the month reached an impressive 78.65 MT, up from 66.32 MT recorded in October 2022. Captives/Others played a significant role in driving this growth, registering an 8.33% increase, and producing 4.53 MT of coking coal.

The coal despatch in India exhibited a notable increase of 18.14% in October 2023, totalling 79.30 MT compared to 67.13 MT in October 2022. Noteworthy growth rates were observed from CIL, SCCL, and Captives/Others, with dispatch figures of 61.65 MT, 5.77 MT, and 11.89 MT, respectively, representing growth rates of 14.83%, 12.44%, and an impressive 43.08%.

They dispatched 64.80 MT, compared to 56.61 MT in October 2022, reinforcing the continuous and steady supply of energy, a fundamental element in fulfilling the nation's power requirements.

Coal-based power generation recorded a remarkable growth rate of 38.98% in October 2023, compared to the same month in the previous year. Overall power generation during October 2023 witnessed a substantial increase of 22.83% compared to October 2022. However, concerning a month-to-month basis, coal-based power generation increased by 7.79%, while total power generation decreased slightly by 0.83% in October 2023 compared to September 2023.

In October 2023, among the top 35 mines, 18 mines exceeded their projected output by producing more than 100%, showcasing their remarkable productivity. Additionally, 14 mines achieved production figures of over 80% but below 100%, demonstrating consistent and reliable performance. Two mines maintained a production rate of more than 50% but below 80%, contributing significantly to the sector. However, only one mine operated below the 50% production mark, highlighting an area for potential improvement.
