In a recently released statistical report by the Ministry of Coal, India's coal industry has demonstrated impressive advancements in coal production, dispatch, and power generation during the month of September 2023. These figures not only highlight the sector's robust performance but also its significant role in ensuring the nation's energy security. Let's delve into the key statistics:
Insight 1: Coal Production Surges by 15.91%
During September 2023, India's coal production experienced a substantial surge, with a remarkable growth rate of 15.91%. This brought the total coal production for the month to an impressive 67.27 MT, up from 58.04 MT in September 2022. Key contributors to this growth were Coal India Limited (CIL) and Captives/Others, who registered growth rates of 12.63% and a staggering 46.87%, producing 51.44 MT and 10.93 MT of coal, respectively. In contrast, Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) reported a slight decline with a negative growth of 0.49%.

In September 2023, India's coking coal production witnessed a steady growth rate of 9.63%, reaching a total of 4.29 MT, compared to 4.28 MT recorded in September 2022. Captives/Others registered an impressive growth rate of 17.36%, resulting in a production output of 0.51 MT in September 2023.

Insight 3: Coal Dispatch Witnesses an Uptick of 15.08%
The dispatch of coal in India also exhibited a significant increase of 15.08% in September 2023, totaling 70.31 MT, compared to 61.10 MT in September 2022. This growth in dispatch figures can be attributed to the commendable performances of CIL, SCCL, and Captives/Others, who recorded growth rates of 12.57%, 4.10%, and an impressive 38.69%, respectively. Their coal dispatch figures stood at 55.06 MT, 4.97 MT, and 10.27 MT.

They dispatched 58.66 MT, as compared to 51.36 MT in September 2022. This growth underscores the continuous and steady supply of energy, essential for meeting the country's power needs.

Insight 5: Power Generation Shows decrease by 6.82%
Coal-based power generation registered substantial growth, with a notable increase of 22.27% in September 2023 when compared to the same month in the previous year. Moreover, the overall power generation in September 2023 witnessed a commendable uptick of 13.54% compared to September 2022. It's worth noting that on a month-to-month basis, there was a slight decrease in both coal-based and total power generation, with coal-based power generation decreasing by 0.95% and total power generation by 6.82% in September 2023 compared to August 2023.

Among the mines, 17 exceeded their projected output by producing more than 100%, showcasing their remarkable productivity. Additionally, 12 mines achieved production figures of over 80% but below 100%, demonstrating consistent and reliable performance. 5 mines maintained a production rate of more than 50% but below 80%, contributing significantly to the sector. However, only 1 mine operated below the 50% production mark, indicating a potential area for improvement.
