According to Statistics South Africa's most recent data, mining production in South Africa fell by 5% in February compared to the same month last year. The largest source of the decline was coal, which fell by 12.6%. The commodity decreased the total by -3.7 percentage points. Iron-ore, on the other hand, was a large positive contributor, increasing by 30.6% and adding 3.1 percentage points, countering coal's negative effect. Seasonally adjusted mining production fell 4.9% in February compared to January, after falling 3.3% in January and 0.6% in December. Moreover, seasonally adjusted mining production fell 0.3% in the three months ending February compared to the preceding three months.
Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices fell 1.2% in February over January. Month-on-month changes in January were -0.6% and 9.2%, respectively. The seasonally adjusted value of mineral sales at current prices was 0.2% higher in the three months ending February than in the preceding three months.
